Football will be the focus for the City of Newport Business club’s latest networking event.

Sam Houldsworth, Chief Executive of Newport County AFC, will be the City of Newport Business Club’s guest speaker at the Mercure Newport on Upper Dock Street in the city centre on Thursday, September 10th.

Since joining the EFL League Two club as CEO last season, Sam has led an ambitious period of change, with a particular focus on commercial growth, new partnerships and deepening Newport County AFC’s connection with its local community and business network.

Under his leadership the club has delivered a series of standout moments – including a high-profile pre-season fixture against European giants AS Roma at Rodney Parade – alongside a growing portfolio of local and national partnerships that are helping raise vital income and profile for the club.

Alongside his role at County, Sam has owned Welsh League club Newport City FC more than seven years.

Running a football club in the Welsh pyramid has helped Sam develop a deep understanding of the impact of sport within the community as well as the challenges clubs face, especially financially.

New to League Two football and a firm believer in the power of sport to bring people together, Sam is passionate about building networks where local businesses and organisations can support one another.

City of Newport Business Club chairman Professor Jonathan Deacon said: “While many of our members will be supporters of Newport County AFC and passionate about their performances on the field, we are sure everyone attending our latest event will be fascinated to hear what goes on behind the scenes at an EFL club.

“Professional football is big business and we look forward to hearing Sam’s insights into how our local club is run, and his plans for the future.

The City of Newport Business Club event starts at 5.30pm.
